Making Your Congregation Accessible: Ideas and Photos

The Acceptance through Accessibility Action Team encourages all synod congregations to commit to removing their barriers and welcoming people with all types of disabilities.

Below are ideas and photos from congregations that have worked to make their congregations accessible. Feel free to contact these congregations to learn more about the ways in which they brought this about.

Faith Lutheran Church, Whitehall

For many years, Faith Lutheran Church, Whitehall, was accessible to both levels of the building only by pushing wheelchairs around the outside of the building. Recently they installed an elevator and an assistance system for the hearing impaired, which consists of an earpiece connected to a wireless receiver, so the person may sit wherever he or she wishes. They also removed a pair of double doors and replaced them with two differently-sized doors, one wide enough for a wheelchair. Realizing that people in wheelchairs don't like to stand out in a crowd, or sit all the way in front or all the way in the back, the congregation cut the length of two pews near the center of the main aisle, creating room for two wheelchairs.

The chair of the property committee writes that Zion Moselem is "a small congregation, so they [the ramp and chairlift] don't get used by a lot of people, but they do get used every Sunday." He notes that their handicap accessibility illustrates the congregation's mission statement: "To be a fellowship of believers dedicated to learning, living, and sharing the Good News of the Gospel with all people through worship, witness, and service."
